What is Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services Limited?

Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services was an independent Financial Advisor that was created and registered as a company on 14 January 2011, firstly in Edinburgh and later moved to Irvine in Ayrshire.

Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services are believed to have convinced their clients to transfer out of their, personal pension Schemes into a SIPP so that they would invest in unregulated risky investments. This unsuitable financial advice resulted in SIPP investors losing all or nearly all of their pension savings.

The first claim against Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services was published by the Financial Ombudsman Service in September 2015.  Mrs X complained that she was wrongly advised by Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services by being told to move out of her Final Salary Scheme into a SIPP so that she could invest in Carbon Credits, which exposed her retirement fund to more risk than she could tolerate. The FOS upheld the claim and ordered Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services to compensate her accordingly.

Later in 2018, another similar complaint against the company was brought to the FOS and it was upheld. If you also took advice from Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services, it is important to have that advice reviewed by a professional.

Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services “Insistent” client

In May 2019 another Financial Ombudsman decision was upheld against Cowley & Miller Independent Financial Services due to them proceeding with a pension transfer despite it being against the advice originally provided to the client. The client was insistent on investing all his funds in Carbon Credits, despite the Financial Advisor only recommending an investment of 10% of the fund in Carbon Credits.

The Financial Ombudsman stated “Cowley & Miller should have advised Mr B not to transfer his pension. But it didn’t do this.”
